Lebanon
ELIC has been partnering with a Lebanese church/school on the border with Syria since 2014. The church’s refugee school was started in response to the on-going war in neighboring Syria, which has put close to 600,000 refugees in the church’s proverbial backyard. Approximately, 75% of these refugees are children who, because of the circumstances in which they were born, have had little or no schooling since the war’s escalation in 2012. The local community of believers, with which ELIC serves, desires to redeem these years by educating and equipping the displaced children of Syria. Children from Kindergarten to grade five are empowered with educational and ethical foundations in hopes that they will leave the school as life-long learners and Truth-seekers.
Lebanon, though on the far western end of the Asian continent, is very much an Eastern culture. The meeting of the East with the West results frequently in ambiguity, unmet expectations and both sides striving to understand the other. Ability to flex is the hallmark of teachers who can “make it” here. One of your first Arabic phrases to learn should be “Mafi mishkle”, the Levantine version of “Hakuna matata”.
Lebanon, with a population that is 40% Christian, is a unique place in the Middle East, and we are honored to be in partnership with this school as we work together using education to help Syrians and Lebanese see where true hope and security are found.
