Jordan
Jordan is the home of Petra, beautiful landscapes, and ruins dating back to Biblical times. But for a true picture of life in this place, you need to look no further than “Ahlan wa Sahlan.” This commonly used phrase meaning “Welcome” defines the policy of the country as a whole, as well as the attitude of the people that make it up.
In 2011, Jordan welcomed thousands of displaced Syrians that were pouring over the northern border after the Syrian conflict erupted. Many of these Syrians settled in these northern cities turning small towns of 60,000 people into 120,000 practically overnight.
In 2016, ELIC formed a partnership at a local English center teaching adults. Since then, our teachers have been thrown into the mix of Syrians, Jordanians, and Bedouins that call this charming city their home.
Our students and random people on the street are constantly inviting us over for coffee, tea, and food offering lots and lots of food. Friendships seem to come easily here. If you don’t mind being flexible, have a heart for diving deep into the lives of your students, and are willing to give yourself to work with a team, then Jordan is the place for you. Ahlan Wa Sahlan — we’d love to welcome you!
